V8 4.2! whats going on with my gas mileage?
the V8 is getting terrible gas mileage ... intermittently. checked the wires for the 02 .. and thats not it. here are some clues. trip computer reads out 5.0mpg when the not working. getting about 250 hwy miles per tank rather than 380-400 hwy miles. Also noticed that the MPH on the trip computer reads 1 when the mpg read 5.0 and it works when the mpg are normal. can anyone help me pinpoint whats going on?

ok. lets trouble shoot out loud.
what sends the trip computer the speed? clue .. its not the same sensor that sends it to the speedo as the speedo works, intermittently, but not the at the same time as the fuel milage issue.

the 20v busted a distributor gear ... decided its time to part ... V8 bought from a buddy
its really my brothers car that i'm driving as he bought himself a new ford f150

go to the following link and pull the DTC (Diagnostic TRouble Codes).
Let your car tell you what's wrong with it.

First, measure the actual MPG, ODO trip/Gallons used...
Then decide whether to chase sensor/computer/electrical issues to correct display or fix some actual problem causing sloppy rich condition.
