Does that mean the shift lever won't move out of drive or that the transmission remains in drive regardless of where you put the lever?
There is a tie between application of the brake pedal and release of the shift linkage for changing gears (to reverse, say).
There also is a possibility shift linkage is messed up.

This is a four spd transmission, are you saying that it will not shift in 4th? Are you drivng around in S (Sport mode)? Are you driving under 100mph in S mode, cause if you are drving in Sport mode them you will have to be traveling over 100mph before it will shift into fourth. Try selecting (M) and see if you can manually shift into 1, 2, 3 and then D for 4th.
If you are driving around in E (Economy) then check the ground for the SEM switch. A loss of ground can place your car in Sport mode.
