V8 smelling of fuel leak...
When I crack open the windows to alow the fog to dissipate I find a strong smell of gass being propelled into the cabin.
When siffing under the hood it smells like fuel on the passenger side of the motor. Looking under the massive shroud I can see a black hose that appears to be weeping. Is that my problem? (yea yea... I know... owning the Audi is the problem ;-( ). Any idea on what this line is and why it might be the issue? BTDTs?
This would also explain the pittiful fuel mileage.

Re: V8 smelling of fuel leak...
Sounds like the line that feeds the fuel pressure regulator. If I recall correctly it's a short hose that comes off the passenger side fuel rail, goes into the fpr and then from there goes back to the fuel tank. It could also be the two fuel lines that run between the two fuel rails. One is a feed line and the other is a return line. If it's the line going from the rail to the fpr then you can replace that with a fuel line of the proper size from any pep boys or autozone. The lines that run between the rails are dealer only and run about $90 each.

Re: V8 smelling of fuel leak...
Oops, I misled you about the hoses. The cheap rubber hose is only the vacuum line that runs to the fuel pressure regulator and that always rots out. But that won't cause a fuel leak. If you are leaking at the fpr then it could be the fpr itself, the o-ring that it sits in in the fuel rail, or the braided fuel line that feeds it. The fpr failing is fairly common on the V8, most V8s owners that I know have replaced it and the vacuum hose that feeds it. On my V8 I've had to replace the two cross over fuel lines, but I'm still on the original braided line that runs from the fpr. Repairs like these are pretty much expected on a 15 year old car.

Thanks again George... it was the lower of the two braided fuel lines...
The one with the 90 degree elbow at the fitting. Where the hose connects to the elbow is where the fuel was leaking. All is tight now. That should help the mileage.
Since I installed a used hose I am going to prepare for the inevitable and get a couple of new lines made up in the mean time.
