Engine: 1984MY 5 cylinder
Engine code: WU
Mileage: 138,000 miles
Transmission: 3-speed automatic
Engine Oil: Castrol 20W-50, changed at 3000 mile intervals
Locale: South Florida
The engine is consuming about 1 quart of oil per 500 miles. There's no sign of burning oil. It looks like at least some oil is leaking from the front cam seal.
Roughly what's the order of suspicion of likely oil leakage areas?
I've never used oil dye to find leaks. Has anyone here done so?
TIA.

IMHO:
- Valve cover gasket.
- Loose Alternator mount bolt (into oilway)
- leaking lines to oil cooler
- Worn valve guides (There are tools to replace with head still on)

5W-20 seems like an awfully thin oil to be using. You may want to try using 5W-30, 10W-30 or 10W-40 and I'm sure you'll find it dosen't use nearly as much oil.

leaks here Russ! When last I noticed, there was no major visible problem other than that small leak of oil on my garage floor which looked like it was from the cam seal.
One qt. ev 500 miles is alot, and if it's all external you'll, see it. Pull the plugs and check for signs of oil, as the valve stem seals could be going too. That's where I had most of my oil loss. Seepage through the head gasket is possible too.
