I have never ever seen a 5000CS that was non-turbo, non-quattro in my life, and I grew up in an Audi dealership from 1981 to 1991. I got my first Audi in 1996, and it is still my current daily driver.
The Type43 on the other hand only had the S model regardless of turbo or not.

Unfortunately, Audi and confusion seem to go hand in hand in many ways (engineering and marketing) and quite a few times.
Since CS was not used prior to M.Y. 1986, there shouldn't be any confusion with prior years models, and no one at that time (1986) could have had a mindset that CS=turbo and gotten confused when a non turbo also had a CS designation. Keep in mind too that regular S models were also available.
I bought my Avant in 85 and spent much time (unfortunately) at the dealer in 1986. Saw all the new offerings, and test drove most. I was not confused, but rather annoyed at myself that I didn't wait another year to buy an Audi.

Untrue. I owned a 1986 5000CS front wheel drive when I worked at P/A Manhattan in the 1980's, then a 1986 5000S, also a 1984 5000S,and finally a 1987 CS quattro, which I still own along with a 1988 VW Scirocco 16V. "S" is German for (Spritzen)injected , turbo is t (turbolader) "CS" was just a TRIM package. Salud.
