Default When an old car starts to use oil

say roughly one quart every oil change. Does that indicate engine is going bad ?

B4 you assume it is burning it check for leaks. Wet oil blown on the bottom of things. An '87Q I had went through about that much from a leak in the oil line to the oil cooler.

Default Did you have to do major repair for that leak ?

Tony, I am curious, was that fix expensive ?

All the Audi's Ive owned (all 4000's) have consumed oil inbetween their regular oil changes. Mileages varied from 93,000 miles (84 4k) to 250,000 (86 4kq), and roughly 140,000 (85 4k). I have and still do add oil inbetween oil changes for my cars, I dont worry about it. In my owners manual it says its "normal" for the car to consume oil, but more when the engine is new, which is expected anyways. Im sure at some point Ive put in more than a quart inbetween changes, but I usually dont keep track.
Id say your fine, but I have nothing else to go by with your car. The car is old, stuff is gonna happen, oil will disappear and seep through places. My 85 4k burns oil bad at times, Im sure someday I'll diagnose the problem, its probably valve stem seals or some sort of headwork.
But, I wouldnt worry about it in you situation.

I never completed it b4 selling but Shokane had the cooler and both lines for $285. They said that pulling the lines from the cooler usually broke the cooler so they sold as a set.

Audi wants their usual high prices for the stull. Each line was around $200 new and the cooler was more but I don't remember exactly.

If you have that probelm you might want to call a custom hydralic hose fabricator in your area they might be able to do an on car repair a lot cheaper.

I seem to remember Steve in MI having one of these.

Default If you read car and driver....

The M3 they tested ate up a total of 14 quarts in 40k miles. I don't think that engine is near dieing yet, but then again maybe their version of breaking it in up to 1000 miles was totally off.

Anyway, our 5k burned about a quart every 1500 miles, it never got worse than that, and I'm thinking its cause of the same reasons that Mike said. And if you think about it in your case, 1 quart for every oil change is like a small drop of oil every mile. Ive seen cars that smoke like crazy from burning oil, and the people still go thousands and thousands more.
I wouldnt worry about it at all.
