<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/45027/91pearlv8.jpg"></center><p>Upon shifting the transmission into reverse or drive the rpms will:
1) drop below 50 rpms and recover back up to 800
2) drop below 50 rops and stumble then stall.
both of these situations happen with a cold engine as well as with a warm engine.
the Oxygen sensor has been replaced, OEM not universal.
the transmission fluid is where it needs to be. just did 3 fluid changes to get some new fluid in there. 4 qts out 4qts in.
Hooked up the VAG sensor and pulled the codes. the only error codes that show up is are as follows:
VAG-COM Version: Release 303.1
Control Module Part Number: 441 907 404 C
Component and/or Version: MOTOR PMC 1
Software Coding: 0261200198
Work Shop Code: 1267355758
1 Faults Found:
00537 - Lambda (Oxygen Sensor) Regulation
08-10 - Control Limit Surpassed - Intermittent
These are the measurin blocks for the engine:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
191-(24-26)-(82-90)-123-101-42-(125<135--160)-
255-044
The values in Parenthasis are the ranges. #7 usually ranged between 125 and 135 but every 5 min or so it would creep up to 160 and stay there. that would be followed by the Ox sensor error code.
I have double checked the Oxygen sensor connection and it is connected...
any reccomendations?

My car had a similar idle problem when I got it. It would idle way down, but not quite stall, then rev up to almost 1000 RPM. I used the "blink" method to pull the DTC codes and found 2341 stored. Bentley lists this as the same as your VAG-COM 537. I had just replaced the O2 Sensor with the Bosch generic so I figured it was OK. I cleaned the ISV - no help. I talked to the local Audi Dealer's head mechanic, who listened to the car for 30 seconds, and said "Fuel Pressure Regulator". I replaced the FPR and it idles perfect. His explanation was irregular high fuel pressure was causing the O2 sensor to signal the ECU to trim fuel. The mixture would lean out, then engine would start to die, the ISV tries to correct and you end up with the O2 sensor and ISV playing tug of war with the idle.

V8inVA is a lot more knowledgable than me..but my car had a similar problem and my Audi mechanic said it was the O2 sensor. He bypassed it for me (as I ran out of money) and for the last week it has been running smooth. I dont know 100% that it was the O2 sensor...time will tell. I have yet to replace it with a new one so my gas milage returns to normal.
{I'm looking into doing the O2 sensor myself. The shop where I bought and serviced my Audi just burnt to the ground the other day so I should probably try to do it myself. Hopefully its not as complicated as V8inVA problem was!}
Keep us posted.
P.S. Your car and mine are twins...I was going to post a picture of mine as well, but somethings not working...damn computers.
