went to the store after P/S belt adjustment and steering became very hard after a few blocks, got home and looked under the hood to find fluid all over the place. It was leaking like a sieve out the front seal. Did I maybe over do the belt tightening?

Imagine a large puddle of fluid under this beast! that is what I had.

my guess is you tightened it because it was squeeling. mine did the same thing but looking very closely, the pulley didn't line up correctly. straightening it was a simple matter of putting a washer under the bracket where it attached to the engine. apparently, one time when it was off, i must have dropped the factory washer/spacer.

I tighten, so that tension will only let the belt rotate about 45 degrees when twisted in the middle at the longest lenghth of the belt between pulleys.

and I am back in business! Made sure belt is not to tight (thanks rooster2), and that the pulleys lined up correctly (audijim113). The steering actually feels easier than before (maybe my imagination, or pump was going out anyway).

hope you replaced belt with a good one. Don't waste your time buying a Kelly Springfield from Auto Zone. They don't break, but continually stretch to become loose every 4-6 months. Learned my lesson to avoid that brand.
