Default Won't Start No Spark 5000s 2.3 5 cylinder Automatic 1987 87

My Audi started overheating, (temp guage about halfway and warning light). I noticed that the water was gone from the reservoir and filled it. I thought the fuse for the radiator fan might be blown so I checked it and found that there was a 15 amp fuse where a 30 should be. The fuse checked okay, but I checked all of the fuses since there was something wrong with the diagram or the fuse set up. After checking all of the fuses the car would not start. While I was checking the fuses the back end of the fuse panel came up. Apparently no wires came disconnected, but I tried to start the car immediately after this happened, and no fire to the plugs. This from a car that has had NO starting problems, ever.

I have a friend who was an Audi mechanic for 20 years check it out and he is scratching his head!!

There is no spark from the coil. The coil primary and secondary checks are good. I have voltage to the coil. I'm going to check the distributor and finish troubleshooting according to my Haynes manual, but I feel it has something to do with my checking all of the fuses. I believe the ignition switch was off, but I'm not sure.

Can anyone offer advice on what I may have done by checking the fuses if the ignition switch was on? Could I have damaged the computer? Could the back end of the fuse panel lifting have caused any problems? Is there any kind of protection circuit that might have kicked in because of the overheating and hasn't reset? Could the failure be just a coincidence with the overheating and fuse checking problem?

The wiring diagram in the Haynes manual is very hard to follow, but I'm plugging away at it.

My email is michael0156@earthlink.net or michaelpatrick0156@earthlink.net

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Default If in all your checking of fuses you used one of the 'spares' on the side of the box

that might be your problem. The ones lined up along the side of the box are for the ECU / ICU and are not spares.

Default DOH!!

Thanks Tony.

I'm at that age. Easily entertained and confused.
