Default Why do you think it needs piston rings?

I have almost 240,000 miles on my 12v V6 and the rings are still A1, unless you are losing alot of compression your rings are fine. At 160,000 miles I would definitely replace the timing belt and water pump and the thermostat while you have the engine that far apart.

Default If the PO poorly maintained it

then maybe look at cleaning injectors and intake. I've seen some wicked crap come out of intakes. Carb cleaner will do a good job.

Default the head gaskets might have a little something to do with the oil burning problem too...

with 160K miles on that motor the head gaskets are probably ready to be replaced. you may also want to look and make sure that the valley pan gasket is all right.
