it's wider so it can accomodate the wider belt on the 16v head. As for the intermediate shaft gear...this depends. Does the 3A have a dizzy that runs off the intermediate shaft gear? If so, how many teeth does the gear have? If not, then you can use the intermediate shaft gear from a 16v. Just so you know, the crank gear and the cam gear on the 16v are the same as an A4 1.8T AEB...that might help in your search of a used one. Although, the crank gear is pretty inexpensive new.

On the 8 valve, the cam and intermediate sprockets are identical (literally interchangable). Not sure about the 16v. If you are going to move the distributor to the block and drive it off the intermediate shaft, you need to verify that it will spin at the same speed as the cam. The gearing between the intermediate shaft and the dist must be the same at the 8v (you'll know if there is a problem if the dist won't fit) and the cam sprocket must have the same number of teeth as the intermediate sprocket.

you could try putting another 16v cam gear on the intermediate shaft...you need to keep the crank:cam:intermediate shaft at a 1:2:2 ratio...so the intermediate shaft gear will need the same amount of teeth as the cam gear.
your other option i would guess is to block off the distributor in the block and use the one in the head. The 16v dizzy has 4 windows, though...and rotates backwards to the one in the block, so there are modifications that need to be done.

off the head because it will be tricky to get things turning the same speed. The best answers on this will come from the vwvortex 16v forum.

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=35</a

also i was told i need to run the dist on the block casue i guess the dist. turns the oil pump? and again using the dist. on the head doesnt seem like there is enough room. unless i relocate the batt. and then there is cost i have to buy a 9a dist. which i am not wanting to do. Basically what needs to be done for me to use the current 3a dist.
