1988 Audi 90 KNock problem

1988 Audi 90 KNock problem
Im having a problem with our audi 90. It knocks when you rev it up until you reach about 3500rpm then its like it balances out and goes away until you let off and then again from 3500 down to about 1800rpms. any help would be great.
