Default 1990 AUDI 80 Thermo-Time Switch

I have cold start idle problems. Don't we all! I pulled the cold start valve cranked the engine and no spray. Replaced 2pin white temp sensor and cold start valve still don't work. Bought a thermo-time sensor but can't find it. Someone told me this car does not have one. The AUDI dealer told me it does even though when they looked at my car they could not find it. Can someone please tell me if this car has one and were it is. It is NOT on the coolent flange. There is only a small one on top which sends the temp to the dash board and a two pin white on the bottom which I replaced with the same part#. If it doesn't have one then what controls the cold start valve? Thanks.

Hello,
I replaced the 2 pin white on the bottom. This is the temp sensor but not the thermo It did nothing for the cold start valve. I was told this is not the thermo-time (by the AUDI dealer). The thermo I bought is about three times the size but the same in shape (But they don't know were it goes?????). Why do they sell a thermo for the 80 if it don't exist? I unplugged the top sensor, it sends the temp to the dash. The only other option is the wiring but why would that be bad. This car has 80,000 miles on it and I bought it with 34,000k on it two years ago in 2001. I burnt the differential at 75,000k $$$$, replaced all four rotors and pads at 50,000k (all four squeal like little pigs even with 2 miles on them) it don't idle, it don't start, the air conditioner turns on by itself (pulled the power wire from the a/c to stop it), the center muffler is fried $$$, and the front driver side steering grinds and groans. Sorry for venting here on this board but did I buy a lemon or are all AUDI's like this???

Default Correction! Neither is the "thermo-time-sw"! ;O)

The thermo-time switch was originally on the back of the cylinder head, if equipped.

What you have pictured, is the temp sendor(top one) for the dash instrument & the temp sender(bottom) for the fuel injection. ;O)

Bosch CIS-E equipped Audi's do not have a thermo-time switch. Only the older "K" systems have it.

To summerize, your Audi does not have one! ;O)

http://www.students.tut.fi/~hezekiel/bosch.htm</a

Default You've got an odd one.

My 88 80 has 215,000 on it and the only work I've done on it is stuff because I wanted to - struts, mounts, battery, brakes, etc. Everything else has worked fine. Believe me, if al Audi's were like yours I don't think any of us would own one!

Default Re: Correction! Neither is the "thermo-time-sw"! ;O)

Hey everyone, I have a similiar prob. with this. My idle fluctuates alot after I've been on the highway. It sounds like a long winded heavy breather then it drops then inhale .... drops...
I've been trying to diagnose the problem from these and other forums. This is what I have replaced so far to rectify this particular prob.

-Idle stab.
-The hoses to the stab.
-Updated banjo bolt w/o minifilter in the fuel line
-Coolant temperature sender(2 pin)on top of flange
-Fuel injector seals
-Ox sensor(it was time anyways)
-Thermo time switch ( not yet installed) see below

Now see if you can help me with this... My orig. switch is a four pin switch that sits under the coolant flange housing. The plastic coupling to the harness just disintegrated and the connections are being held by a thick coat of dielectric grease and lots of luck. I have a new plastic wire coupling and a new switch. But get this... I guess it is an updated part because there is no match at Audi for the old switch they told me this is it and it is only a 3 pin switch. What is up with that!! That other wire must do something!!! I havent installed it yet just because I want to hear it from you folks first. I might have a wrong part, but I have a freind that works in the part dept. at my local Audi dealer and told me that was the part. He thought it was strange as well. Feedback appreciated!!! Thanks!
