Default 1990 CQ whistling Noise???

Wondering if anyone can help me figure this one out- there is a loud whistling noise that seems to be coming from the water pump but can't really pin-point it. It used to only happen in the cold weather right at start-up and then go away. It seems to be happening now more and more at various RPM's. My mechanic said that he thinks it is coming from the alternator (bearings) but when I hear it really seems to come from the pump. Belt tension does not seem to affect it. Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

TIA,

Default Use a stethescope of long screwdriver to hear exact location on engine.

Right now you are only guesing. If mechanic thinks it alternator, have him tell you how he is sure.

Take the v-belts off and see if it still makes the noise.

Default I have the same thing... been waiting about 1.5 years for whatever is bad to give out.

Haven't been able to pin it down. At first, it sounded like a whistling vacuum leak, so I replaced everything vacuum related. Now, I wonder if it is the timing belt and roller, the PS pump or the alternator. Can't think of anything else that would make the noise. But, it does go away when the engine warms up and nothing has broken... yet.

Hard to hear it sitting still with the hood up. That's why I haven't fooled with it a lot. Tried revving the engine sitting still, but got nothing. Then started to drive away and whistle! But, it is unpredictable. Sometimes, yes, sometimes, no.

Default Sounds like a bearing on its way out. Get a long screwdriver....

hold the dull end next to your ear and the pointy end on the suspect component, you'll find it quick enough. Safety first!!!!

I'm pretty sure it is comming from the alternator- checked it via the "long screwdeiver" method. Anyone know if P/N 30091- brush/voltage regulator block includes the piece with the spindle/bearings? Yeah, it has always made the noise since I bought the car (2+ years)and now seems to be ge.tting much worse
