1995 90 Manual Transmission
First let me thank elric for his 6-11-2003 post, it was dead on.
Today I changed the fluid in my 1995 90 for the first time. 105,000 miles on the trani, I was worried it may have pieces of clutch or some nasty sediment in the old fluid, but no problemas.
To reiterate what Elric said in his post. You must convince the dealer to order you vw part# 3357 a triple square socket that allows you to drain the fluid. You also need to get a 17mm hex probably from mac tools or snapon, I couldnot find it at any auto parts store. I also followed everyones advice and got the Redline mt-90 gl-4 fluid because the gl-5 has sulphur that will corrode the bronze syncros.
I first removed the driver side heat shield from the drive axle area, three bolts, allen key. Easy. Remove the Fill plug first, then removed drain plug and drain. Getting the fluid in was messy but easy. I bought a $10 hand pump from an auto store and pumped in from the bottle of fluid. It will start spitting out fluid from the fill hole around alittle less than 3 qts. Let it stop, and replace fill plug. Put shield on and your done.
So, get Audi to order the triple square (25 bones), get the 17mm hex(10bones), 3 qts Redline mt-90(8 bones) and you are in business.
P.S. The shifting is way better, no grind or slip, sorta firm and tight like a young piece of....and the old noises I heard when coasting in gear are gone daddy gone. Enjoy.

I had Redline, but..........
felt it was too "light-weight" of an oil for my gearbox! So I switched to Mobile 1, which I like Mo'better! Yes I know Mobil 1 is "rated" to GL-5, but Mobil doesnt use the sulfur, to get it to GL5 levels. ;O)

Well........
I was forced to rebuild the gearbox, after getting it from a salvage yard who didnt bother to inform me it was underwater, in the floods of a few years back.
Originally I filled it with Mobil 1. No problems, issues or even an indication of anything. All was "quiet".
Friend convinced me to switch to Redline.
My gearbox made sounds like the differential was going. Typical diff whine at certain speeds.
Notchy-er shifting.
Removed Redline, re-filled with Mobil 1, noises went away, shifts smoother.
Maybe my gearbox is telling me something? :O/
If your gearbox is fine with Redline, keep it in! ;o)
