My serpentine tensioner (1995 90 non quattro automatic) (the automatic tensioner with the 17mm allen socket) went bad and chewed my belt, so I replaced it but cannot get the belt back on. I've tried letting all the tension off the tensioner and sliding the belt over various pulleys (power steering, tensioner, alternator) but to no avail. The belt appears to need an extra 1/2 inch or so of slack to get on.

I've dealt with difficult automatic tensioners before, but this one just seems to be impossible. I'm using a belt from duralast but I don't see why this in itself would be an issue, but I could certainly be wrong. If anyone could give me advice it would be much appreciated.

A different belt length may be required depending on whether the vehicle has been updated with a newer style tensioner
