90 20v sedan fuel pump prefiter?
I just had the fuel pump go out on a 1990 20v sedan, I was wondering in there is a prefilter on the car and if not was anyone put one on.
When I pulled the fuel hose off the back of the pump the gas was dirty looking, then went to clean as it poured out.

There probably was some gunk in there, but that's probably not why the pump failed...
fuel pumps can handle quite a bit of garbage, so to speak, without being damaged. But you cannot allow anything into the fuel distributor, injectors, etc. My bet is that your old pump died of old age.

I noticed the 89 vw fox that I got a pump off has a small rectangular prefilter on it.Maybe that's why the fox pump is still working.
