Default 90 4cyl 1988 rear shocks help

To replace the rear shock do you need a spring compressor or any special tools?

Default Re: No.

Just place the body of the car on jackstands, place a jack under the rear axle one side at a time, and jack the axle up, right to the point where you almost begin to lift the body off of the jackstands you put it on earlier. THen remove the upper shock nut located inside the trunk. Slowly lower that side of the axle down and the spring will relax, and the strut shaft will come out of the trunk. Now loosen the botton bolt and remove! Take off all your goodies and stick them on your new part and put back in, tighening the bottom bolt first, then jack the axle back up, compressing the spring and raising the shaft back into the trunk. Put the upper bolt on and your're done!

Default Re: How are you supposed to get a compressor in the rear of the car???

It's not like a front strut that you can remove on the bench. I did the rears on mine using this method and it took less than an hour. Remember, B3's are different than B4's.

How can using a compressor be easier than using a jack?

Default Re: Right, the B3 is not like that.

With the B3's you either do it my way or you (somehow) get the compressor in that area where you have about 3 inches in all directions. I don't see how.
