Default 90-91 CQ or VW GTI VR6

I am thinging about getting an older car as a sort of project car/daily driver/weekend racer.
I already have an A4 1.8TQ.
I have been looking at 96-97 VW GTI VR6's for under 10k with some mods and some 90-91 CQ as well.
My concerns are: price of mods, maintenance costs and longterm reliability.
As far as that goes I beleive the VW wins but I am love Quattro so much that I couldnt decide whether to give it up for a FWD.
The VR6 will be faster than a CQ as well and I will not do the 20V turbo upgrade to the CQ so it will remain a relatively slow car with better traction than the VW.
Help convince if I am right not!

Thanks,
Chris

Default coupe all the way...

yeah teh VR6 might be a little bit faster, but giving up all wheel drive for a daily driver is too much of a sacrafice. if you want to keep the A4 nice they you will probably not drive it in the salty snow. I also think that the 20 valve motor is much for durable than the VR6.

Default Hands down, the GTi...

...I love the three Coupes I have, but there are a boatload of mods out there for the VW. The 20v Coupe just doesn't have much support from the aftermarket comunity (to all of our dismay). I had an '87 16v GTi and loved it. It was a little sling-shot.

Default Re: I would'nt say they are "cheaper" but, there are more parts readily available, and easier to get

Its simply econimics!

Supply & demand!

There's more of a demand for VW performance parts, so the market has accomidated with a healthier supply!

Default Agreed, but not just because of traction...

Just stand them next to each other and compare looks... I could've gotten tons of Golfs with better options, engine etc. for the same price as my coupe. But "She's got the look!", it's as simple as that! I just have a deep-rooted disaffection to VWs, especially golfs. IMO a Golf symbolizes everything that's boring about cars. It's a vehicle that gets you from A to B, and that's it. For some people that's all they expect from a car, but mine has to have some form of class and style. And there's not denying the CQ has tons o' style. I guess it's also a matter of taste. Just my 2 Euro-cents, *ggg*...
