90CS V6 Strange engine noise, need help
Hello,
I have a 90CS 1993 and it definitely has a problem with engine.
The noise comes from the alternator, but it is not an alternator! -- I just have it replaced trying to fix this strange noise.
The sound is like somebody hits the engine with a mid size hammer from the inside... Hits frequency depends from the RPM.
Everything besides this noise is ok. Engine runs smoothly and has a lot of power. I'm driving the car with this noise for a week already and nothing came out from the engine yet and it didn't blow up.
So what it could be? Could the noise come from the starter? If it is in the engine why it didn't overheat in the place where noise comes from and blew up yet?
Thanks,
Michael

This doesn't sound good. Lower engine noises are bad...change the oil as Stealth suggested, but if it doesn't go away, you might have a larger problem. How many miles on the car? Did the noise start all of a sudden, or has it grown over the course of a week?

I'm changing oil today, by the way, what kind of Mobil would you recommend?
Noise started all of the sudden, it doesn't change over the time, and it event disappeared for a day once. The car has 123K miles on it.
I'm afraid it is inside of the block, but again, how an engine can work with a damage that produces such a loud hitting noise?
Thanks,
Michael

Re: Took it to mechanic
He says it is a belt tesioner... Regular belt tensioner!
Can it make such a _loud_ hitting noise? And even make alternator vibrate?

Re: that's what I'm afraid of
They are not an Audi shop, but this mechanic loves Audi and they always have all kind of european cars in the shop.
Actually two mechanics from this shop were looking at it.
Can you tell if it is inside of the engine by the oil color change? I think if oil become dirty really fast it means that it is inside.
