Sadly, I tried that already. The piece is brass. Also, to be sure, I took apart the other one and tested to see if it was magnetic, no dice.

*le sigh*

Take a picture of the hole it fell into - I have a block sitting on my workbench with no oil pans on it. I should be able to tell you where it goes when I get home

Here you go.

Top of the head, just below the cam. There are 4 of them total. Let me know if you need a wider view for perspective.

Took a leap of faith, drained the oil and pulled the bottom pan. Got it. Yay!

Next question: can I use black ATV to seal the pan back on? The seal is still there, but a tad pulled off.

Also, do the 95 oil check valves in the head work on the 94? Different construction but appear to be functionality equivalent.

The anti-drain valves are dealer only. I replaced mine a few years back, did not notice any difference so chances are they were fine but I did it anyways since it was there. I bought a new valley pan as well just to start fresh.
You can buy them from genuinevwaudiparts for $36.89 each + 10 bucks shipping.
It is where I bought mine.

078103175D $59.50 $36.89<-------their price.

Any other dealer only item you need now is the time to buy it as their shipping stays flat until $100 then it gradually goes up by a few bucks.

Clearly you found it but here's the photo. They all go straight through the block and into the oil pan...

Thanks much, I just couldn't think of anywhere else for it to go, so I jumped on it. Pulling the pan isn't hard, so no biggie.

Thanks for that info. The ones I pulled off the 95 should work in theory, save me $70 . If not, I'll know pretty quick and I'll pick them up where you suggested because that's the best price I've seen.

Gvap has great service and the only place to go for dealer items at wholesale pricing.
I saved a fortune so far vs my local dealer.

They also verify per your VIN any parts to make sure you get the correct item and if not they will notify you before going forward.

Default It's all running, yay!

Got it all running. Runs sooo much quieter and smoother now. Still seem to have a minor oil leak. Going to pull it into the garage this evening to take a look.

Thanks everyone for their help and suggestions.
