Rottella synthetic 5W-40 from wally mart.. 16 bucks for a gallon but damn good oil..
All the XW-30 oils are energy conservation crap oils unless it's the high mileage versions...

Rotella-T = good oil for the price
Rotella-T covers all the bases. its a group III I believe synthetic, flows down to -47F or something so it will easily handle your winter weather but once it warms up it has the thickness to not slip past the rings on "loose" engines.
Been running it in my 2.8 for awhile now without issue.
Mobil 1 has a new synthetic, 10-30, 10-40 high mileage that might not be bad either.
I tossed it in my mom's A6 and its fine.
