ABS light comes on after a few moments...

So I searched high and low through the archives and have not found an answer for this...
On my 88 90 Quattro, when I start the car, the ABS is fine. THe first couple of times I use the breaks, the pedal rumbles and it feels like ABS is kicking on... then after that, the ABS light comes on and thats it... no more ABS.
So... I guess the question is, is this the wheel sensors or the relay? Or maybe the ABS unit itself...
Any thoughts?
This happens every time I start the car, so, thankfully, its not one of those really annoying intermittant problems. Will pulling the fuse make the light go out at least? Or pulling the Relay? I have to get the car inspected soon and I really dont want to have to argue with the inspection people about whether or not a non-functioning ABS system constitutes a failure for not having working brakes...
The brakes DO work afterall, and they work quite well... just no ABS after about a minute or roughly 20-30MPH...

The ABS sensors at one of the hubs is too far/close in the hub.
You need to remove the culprit sensor, clean it and realign it in the hub.
dealer sells a cap that sets the right distance, but you can keep testing the distance. Push it all the way in, and then back it off "just a hair"
