Default AC Upgrade?

Hello, I drive a 1988 Audi Quattro 80. It runs great however the Problem I have has to do with the AC system. The system needs to be recharged however my mechanic says that the gas is no longer being made much and is horrablly expensive. So, Is it possible/worth the effort to get an AC upgrade? What are your suggestions?

Default It's very simple and inexpensive to convert to r134a.

It's basically only a matter of evacuating the existing r12 from the system, getting two adapters for the high/low ports, and filling with the proper amount of 134 AND 134-specific oil. Your wrench should be able to do all of the above for under $100 (They sell the r134a recharge kits at Autozones for $30-$40 bucks; very inexpensive. Good luck.

Default Add dye so you can check for leaks. If you need recharged, you probably have a leak.

Replacing a hose or two can be expensive, but it is better than running out of freon all the time. And better for the atmosphere.

Default R134A is much more enviro-friendly...Check line connections first, o-rings can dry out and cause

leaks. That is where the CQ was leaking from...

Well, I know why I lost it... it is pretty much because when I was in the engine, I unscrewed the pipe leading out of the accumulator by accident =( otherwise, no leaks.

Default The Electronic climate control in slightly newer Audis.

How hard would it be to get that to work in my car, I currently have the 3 Dial setup.

Default Others have said "Very Difficult" when the ?? was asked previously.

You may have to swap out the whole evaporator/heater core container, as one works with cables (3 dial) and the other works either with motors or vacuum controls (I don't know which). May be more trouble than it's worth...

Try a search?
