Air Filter

Air Filter
What am I, new? Seeing as I have a habit of breaking things, maybe someone can enlighten me as to how to simply replace the air filter on my 1990 90? I popped the spring clips, and it seems I am going to snap the injector lines or something else when I try to remove the top portion to gain access to the filter element itself - any guidance is appreciated.

Just be careful - if it hasn't been replaced in a while the lid might just be stuck to the bottom...
...take your time and work at it. The stuff on top of the airbox lid is suppose to be there and has enough give in it to usually change an air filter. I thought the same thing when I went to change it on my '88 80 (8V).

Do you know if the entire top unit, with the injector lines, etc, flips right (towards drivers side) etc or if anything other than the spring clips need to be undone? I can get the lid to lift an inch or two, so it isn't stuck, but there's no room to remove the old filter.

If I remember right, the intake boot was the limiting factor as to how far it could travel...
...you might get some more leverage if you remove it from the top of the airbox...but the injector lines and the rest of all of that stays.
I remember moving mine towards whichever way I had slack with all of the lines/connections/etc - I've only had to do it once or twice, so, without trying again, I couldn't tell you.

Thanks, much appreciated, I just don't want to f**k it up - break something, miss a line or a hose putting it back, etc.

Yeah, loosen both BIG ends of the air boot, leave all the little
stuff connected like wires, tubes, hoses, etc. Wiggle around and lift. It's a bi#ch, but it will come up, eventually. Then, when you put it back, be sure it is level (not jambed in there crooked) before snapping the clips. You have to replace the cover while slipping it into the air boot sort of simultaneously.
It's all pretty sturdy. And it does take some muscle. But look around the edges - see where it wedges - and keep wiggling around.
ALSO: The air connection (two plastic pieces) into the box (in front of the filter box by the headlight) should come out first. That helps a lot.
