All this strut mount talk has got me searching for a 'ping' sound in my suspension...

I removed the top cap and 22mm nut and I was able to spin the slotted nut by hand. Tightened it down, and the noise is completely gone.

the cupped washer and Nylock nut sitting tightly against the slotted nut and acting as a "jam nut" against it. That means both the slotted nut and the Nylock jam nut are spinning counter-clockwise when viewed from above. And that shouldnt be able to happen when'if everything is tightened securely.
But you're within 10-15% of needing new strut mounts anyway based on the pic so there'll be time get it all sorted out very soon.

now. Thats a hard thing to miss when the hoods open. Unless of course it just sudennly started and you got VERY lucky catching it, just in the nick of time!
I'd hate to think what would happen if one of those mounts fell out of the car while driving, or worse... turning!
Either way thats a DAMN fortunate discovery!

and the cupped washer tightened down on it prevented it from lossening further... the 22mm nut was definetely still tight. removing the nut/cup combo today may have drawn the slotted nut up further to the position seen in the pic...
is that possible?

I had it happen on my 90 before and just recently on the back of my Coupe...I think that slotted nut, when fully tightened sits below the level of where cupped washer meets the mount's rubber body, no?

the reason being the cupped washer can actually be tightened down so tight it takes on the shape of the actual slotted nut tool. On some cupped washers you can flip them over and see a very distinct impression/imprint of the slotted nut. In extreme cases the cupped washer can actually act just like the special tool by actually having been tightened SO hard they they will dig into and conform to the top of the slot and act like the tool when the cupped washer above them
is loosened, taking the slotted nut with it up the strut threaded sleeve.
Probably the best explanation of any.
