I've used studless winter tires since 1996, and they are by far more effective on ice and safer than studded tires. (I never was comfortable driving at 70 on the occasional dry December hiways riding on little steel pins.) I like the Dunlap Graspics because they are not directional and I can rotate them every winter and get 6-7 winters out of a set. The Bridgestones and Michelins are rated better on ice, but they are directional, and the Bridgestone's wear faster. Consumer Reports is actually a good resource for winter tire ratings.

Around here... Portland, Oregon... the Nokian Hakkapeliitta's are very popular among the Audi winter sports crowd. I would imagine the Finn's know a thing or two about driving on snow and ice.

Never used them myself as I'm not a winter sports person so don't have the need for that kind of traction all winter long... just something that is a good all season tire.

I have been running Nokian Hakka's for well over a decade.
They made the first ever snow tire and have more patents then anybody.
The original is generally the best.

The rack has General altimax which is their #1 tire, it can be studded.
As I read the General uses an older Nokian design through royalties.

Around $360 for a set with shipping for 15's.

Dunlop Wintersport 3D is also a highly regarded tire and they usually have rebates on them.
