Default Actually all hydraulic clutches are "self-adjusting" though some may interpret that differently...

as the pedal engagement point will not change in a hydraulic setup, it shouldn't at least, even when the clutch disc is wearing down. A cable actuated clutch will change engagement point as the clutch disc wears and some even have enough range they need to be adjusted when the clutch starts to slip, adjust and you've got more life left on that disc, older VW's come to mind. If we start to slip it's usually time to crack in.

We can change our free play with the actuator rod from the clutch master. It really isn't designed to change the engagement point, but it can be used like that as Joe has done. There is a spec for setting the pedal free play at the top of the stroke.

Making sure the free play is at the top of the stroke is to make sure the hydraulic system isn't loaded up all the time or the pressure plate being actuated prematurely and causing premature slippage/wear.

Cheers,

Default I thought you begged to differ?

"Hydraulic clutches are usually self adjusting: The friction material on the clutch plate gradually wears down. The position where the disengagement mechanism begins to take up therefore changes and the clutch mechanism must adjust to compensate. Hydraulic mechanisms rely on the diaphragm to return the hydraulic fluid through the master cylinder and into its reservoir as it pushes the disengagement mechanism and the slave-cylinder piston back. The master cylinder contains a valve to allow this to happen fully but the valve is open only when the clutch pedal is fully raised - otherwise the disengagement mechanism would never operate. Resting a foot on the clutch pedal full-time therefore prevents the clutch from self-adjusting, puts load on the throwout bearing and can cause it to fail prematurely. Similar problems can occur from resting a foot (long-term) on the pedal of a cable-operated clutch."

From all the Audis I've driven and from the info I have been presented Audi has fitted our cars with self adjusting setups.

Just a quick search:

<a href="https://www.audiworld.com/model/historical/86/5000.shtml">https://www.audiworld.com/model/historical/86/5000.shtml</a>

<a href="https://www.audiworld.com/model/historical/87/coupe.shtml">https://www.audiworld.com/model/historical/87/coupe.shtml</a>

These cars have nothing special that our models do not have.

Yes Luk has been working on a different type of self adjusting clutch that can be used with any system of actuation, cable or hydraulic, cable clutches are still out there.
