Default Anybody ever fixed their coolant temp gauge...

Mine stoped working not too long ago, so I sorced the problem to be either the gauge, most likely not, or some resistors or something else on the back of the cluster board. So my question is does anybody know how could I check for that resistor that sits right behind the gauge, inbetween those 2 wholes. I tried using my little multimeter, but it shows nothing, I am not an electric wizard but I think I don't need power to measure the resistance, do I? I have another cluster and when I plugged it in and that one worked, so I opened both gauges and there was nothing different between the two, so I am assuming its some resistor or something else. Here is the pic of the resistor i am asking about, the other 2 on the left shoe some resistance but it just keeps jumping around, on both clusters, so I guess those are good:

This other picture shows that little black thingy, on the circuit board both sides of the resistor behind the gauge are connected to it, what is that? How can I check it for malfunctioning? bentley says nothing.

Thanks, please ask if you need some more explanation of the problem

S3 is nice, I can't claim any improvement in hp but I sure know car got more torque, I guess if it got torque it got hp too! Well, the way I look at it is whenever you get something like that you get excited and once you try you are "sure" its better than before, but also, the other day I balanced my winter tires and car ran "better", get it. The best test would be racing another audi 90 thast stock or measuring my 0-60 which I really don't. Maybe I should.
As for the tube, its stock plastic one, though I am working on diy silicone, far less cheaper than UrS4's primarily coz I'll be using generic joiner, he is making his own so thats what costs, I guess.

Yeah, that kind of tube came with earlier 90's, you also have small bore MAF, you would need to get a newer one to send to UrS4 as a core. That is one humongous filter, you should take that plastic behind the headlight off since that where you get the most of air coming in, between the headlight and the grille, there should be a rubber piece protruding further out in the grille area that directs air toward your air box/filter.

Default "black thingy" looks like a transistor.... used for switching power (like from zero -to- full)

i know that if they're too "weak" to begin with, over time the transistor will give up the ghost simply because its been overloaded one to many times.

It's often the case that they burn out. You'd haveta find out its serial # & then try to determine if you can buy another one. I know where I'd go locally, but I can't help you with nation wide suppliers...it's just to unique an item.

as for your multimeter, it's likely that it doesn't have the capability to properly measure resistance. From what I can make out of your pic, the resistor in question is a 680? Blue-Gray-Brown... and no, you don't need a supply of pwr to measure resistance. Just the right settings & lead plug-ins on yer scope. hth

check yah later

Default wow, and I thought you were a pilot!

ok that helped a lot, now how can I (if at all) check if that transistor is good or not? What kind of # am I looking for in serial #, is it printed on it directly?
if I could find the info maybe you could get it for me and send it over??
thanks

Default I think the first thing you were looking at

"between the two holes" is a diode (let current flow one way).
The second thing I think is a transister which only some (better) multimeters can test.

Btw, I fixed my guage just by spraying the contacts on the harness plugs with contact cleaner.

You mean the yellow plug that goes on the back of the cluster? If not i am not sure which other contacts.
Thanks
