Anyone ever remove inner CV joint? How?
I've got my drive shaft in the vice and the inner CV boot is changed and ready to go back in. BUT, I can't get the outer CV joint off - of course, the boot is already off.
Anyone know of a "trick" for removing the joint?

A search on www.google.com for "cv joint removal" revealed many hits! ;o)
Here's one-<ul><li><a href="http://www.staugustinefwd.com/Diagnosis/Removal/removal.html">http://www.staugustinefwd.com/Diagnosis/Removal/removal.html</a</li></ul>

Got it - or at least around it!
I improvised - I slid the outer CV boot all the way down the shaft and left the CV joint on. I cleaned it well and regreased it first of course. It's tough to slide the boot all the way down, but with TIME and patience, it is possible to do without damaging the boot.
The dealership called me back after I had done this and told me there is a half moon clip holding the brass plate in on the end of the joint body. I assume there is a bolt holding the the joint to the end of the shaft inside.
Well, I got one side done today! I'm planning on posting a more thorough description of how to change the B4 boots. It's very different from the one posted elsewhere in the forums for the A4. The B4 (B3 as well?) has a very different suspension set-up.
Thanks for the help and replies.

Re: The B4 (B3 as well?) has a very different suspension set-up? Really?
The B3 & B4 are "very simular"! ;o)
Only differance between the B3 & B4 is the special tool your suppose to use to pop off the outer CV! BTDT!
The inner CV, for which you asked your original question on, has the identical "half-moon-clip" on the B3 & B4! There are no "brass" parts on either CV joint.
Dont want to burst your bubble, but B3 & B4 CV boot changes are nearly identical in proceedure!
I know, because I owned a 1988 90 & a 1993 90.
Before that a 1986 Coupe.
I also own all the "special tools" listed in the Bentley manual needed to do the CV boots! ;o)
I change CV boots religiously! Also keed a complete set(2 inner & 2 outer) boot kits handy at all times!
Your write-up worries me, especially if it tells others to not remove the inner CV, and slide the boot all the way down the axle!
Removing the inner CV, by removing the half-moon clip is the easiest way to R&R the boot.

Call off the dogs, Mik
I was referring to the fact that the B4 AND B3 suspensions are different from the A4, which is the subject of the lengthy post made elsewhere in the forums on changing CV boots! I used to own a 1991 80 and now a 1995 90S, so I've been around Audis awhile myself. That is why I thought THIS forum could use some description of changing the boots. When I posted earlier on a description, you responded with a message that no one should attempt maintenance without a manual. If that's the case, why even have the forum???? 80% of what's here is "How do I do this?". If we all had manuals, Bentley would be much richer and we wouldn't have much to talk about here.
Call off the dogs, man. We're on the same side here! You're advise is welcome and useful, but it's an open forum.
