Default audi 80 problem question

I have a 1988 80 quattro with 2.3l i5 with 213k. At initial startup it runs and idles a little rough. Most times when I go to take off it doesn't want to go. Feels kind of restrictive but doesn't want to kill. It gets better as it warms up and doesn't feel as sluggish but still not top performance as my friends 1990 80 with 2.0 8v smoked me in third gear accel. Any answers will be greatly appreciated to get my car running better by winter!

Default What year is it? Anyone have a good writeup on pulling faults codes. I only have hard copies.

On an '88 you use the Fuel Pump Relay by putting a spare fuse in the top of the relay and watch the blink codes on the 'check engine light'. On '89+ you'll need to make an LED light.

INPUT TESTS
Preliminary to the test sequence: Car must be driven for 5 minutes for the control unit to sence the faults and store them in memory....leave the car running to pull the fault code (if the ignition is shut off, you have to drive it again for 5 minutes before pulling codes again).

On the '88 you bridge the the terminals on top of the Fuel Pump Relay with a spare fuse for at least 4 seconds with the engine running at less than 2000rpm, then remove the fuse. The engine warning light on the instrament cluster should begin flasshing as soon as the fuse is removed from the fuel pump relay.

The first sequence displays the codes for the ignition control unit.

The second sequence diplays the codes for the fuel injection control unit.

If 4444 (that's series of four groups each consisting of four blinks), then no faults are present. If a different sequence than 4444 is displayed, then write down the blinks (e.g. 2232). After writting down the code, then reinsert the fuse and it will flash 0000 (that's four groups with the light on for about one second for each zero), which will indicate the end of the ignition fault sequence.

Insert the fuse again to display the fuel injection control unit codes.

At the end of the injection control unit diagnostics you pull the fuse and reinsert it will read 0000 - then start back on the ignition control unit codes again.

Then look up the codes in the link provided.

That will help lead you down the correct path for problem resolution. It's rather limited so you still need to use your mechanical knowledge.

OUTPUT TESTS
You can also run output test the same way with the ignition on - engine off:
- Turn ignition off
- Insert spare fuse
- Turn ignition on
- close full throttle switch to activate the indicated tests (you will do this sequence 4 times as you watch the blinks to verify which output test you're on).

4341 - Diff press reg current should be 10mA with full throttle switch open)...just skip this test

4343 - Charcoal Cnister Shut-Off Solenoid
- remove, then reinsert spare fuse into fuel relay pump socket
- after 4 seconds remove fuse
- engine warning light should repeatedly blink
4343
- close full thottle switch to activate
- should hear it clicking

4431 - Idle stabilizer
- remove, then reinsert spare fuse into fuel relay pump socket
- after 4 seconds remove fuse
- engine warning light should repeatedly blink 4431
- close full thottle switch to activate
- should hear it clicking

4443 - Cold Start Valve
- remove, then reinsert spare fuse into fuel relay pump socket
- after 4 seconds remove fuse
- engine warning light should repeatedly blink 4443
- close full thottle switch to activate
- should hear it clicking for for 10 seconds max.
