I need a new set of rear upper control arms. Its hard to find ones for the 90 used and in good condition. But when I was searching I saw some rear upper control arms from the early a4s. They look exactly the same, the construction is the same stamped steel construction. Are they the same thing? Will they fit?

Yes, some but not all of the B4Q migrated to the B5Q.

Part number 8A0505323B was superseded by part number 8D0505323B.
upper left A-arm
Part number 8A0505324B was superseded by part number 8D0505324B.

I just replaced both with new units 6 months ago as the bushing were shot and the metal was so weak it was pointless to pay to have new bushings pressed in.
I also replaced all hardware from the dealer as the nuts and bolts were original.
I found them on sale somewhere for $214 each.
I now see genuineaudiparts has them listed for $153 each! Geesh Audi never drops the price on anything.

8A which is the old number they are $153, the newer number 8D they are $241.

You might want to write and verify this as it makes no sense why basically the same item has two different prices.

Just curious, is there a torque spec for those control arm bolts?

Yes there should be but I do not have access to Bentley right now. All suspension nuts will have a torque spec and generally it is done bearing a load.
It is also a good idea to buy new nuts as they are lock nuts. When I did my order to genuineaudiparts I threw in some OEM nuts along with all new hardware. Suspension bolts/nut should never be reused due to age, stress, rust etc.

The Upper inner bolt is around a foot long thus the price.

OEM M12,1,5 is N90635001 and are 90 cents a pop.

i dont know if this was mentioned or not, but you will need new inner bolts (the long ones) for the upper a-arms, the original ones are too short

so i'll need the hardware from an A4, correct? Does anybody have a good link/site to get them from? Or am I best to just go to the dealer?

Get the specs for the bolts and then just go to a fastener shop (Brafasco, FastenAll ect ect) and buy your nuts and bolts there. some smaller stuff can even be found at Home Deopt/Rona

as for the bolt Specs, Download a copy of ETKA for all your WV/Audi specs. Same program the Dealers use. Gets you part numbers and specs like bolt size, thread spect ect ect ect.

The bolts are not too short, the inner bolt is the exact same length if you buy the OEM bolt as what was on the car. The upper control arms are the same for B4Q an B5Q and the hardware is also the same.

ETKA shows N102 655 01 for the inner long bolt for B5Q, same as B4Q.

If the VIN is before 8C-P-250 then the shorter 180mm bolt is used, N102 194 01 otherwise it is the 212mm bolt mentioned above.

You can buy OEM dealer parts at wholesale through genuineaudiparts.

For the 7.50 shipping and the savings VS from your local dealer and driving it is a good deal.

By the time you find some custom bolt shop and even if they have a grade 8.8 zinc plated bolt which is M12 with a 1,5 pitch and 212MM long you will end up paying a good $10+ for it.
You know you are getting the right bolt and top quality if you buy the OEM bolt from Audi.
Last thing you want to do is put some inferior Chinese made bolt holding up your suspension, it is just not worth a few bucks in cost savings.

I'm only about 25 minutes from my local Audi dealer and they have a huge parts department so I'll prob drop in there. At the very least I can stop by my local hardware store and get new lock nuts.

This is one of those times it's better to do it right the first time, save yourself time and trouble.

Just bring the part numbers I posted with you, they will look it up in ETKA to confirm and your done.

Doubtful they will have them in stock there but they can get them within a day or so.

You could save yourself the extra trip and just get the matching M12 zinc plated lock nuts.

I just replaced these items after 18 years so when you do you won't be touching it for a very long time.

These new bolts and nuts will likely outlast the entire car.
