Problem is when the rear arms are 15+ years old with rust and wear and tear and the bushings are shot it is just not worth the R/R.
I talked in length with a 35 year Audi master mechanic about this. The price of OEM bushings plus the special presses needed to replace the bushings you are looking at the same price of just buying brand new arms after labor.
This is the route I went. I found a site that had a coupon and bought both sides for $209, the best price for new.
I no longer have noises after I replaced the arms.

Thanks

Autopartswarehouse is where I bought them but they won't allow coupons on OES stuff so you can do better.....
The trick is they do not show up if you use the part number.
W0133-1735104 is for the right
W0133-1735107 is for the left.
Go to partstrain, search under 96 Audi A4 quattro or use the numbers above.
They are $208 and $207 each, same as Autopartswarehouse but you can use coupons.
Where the promo box is at the bottom of your cart type PTCART for 10% off.
Sub-Total:
$416.89
Shipping:
FREE
Discount:
- $41.69
Estimated Tax:
$0.00
Order Total:
$375.20
Best price you are going to find anywhere, they are $241 each at genuineaudiparts, retail $325.
This is actually a better price then when I bought mine!!

Just a note to those who are using the OEM bushings. The exact through-bolt torque is probably less important than exactly when you torque those bolts. As I still use some OEM bushings at the back of my B4, I fill my tank in preparation for the weight on wheels moment when I tighten those through-bolts.
Here's another alternative.
Cost of a pair of used forged arms found on a Saturday morning at the U-pick: $20.00
Cost of some poly-urethane Chevy Tahoe spring bushings, I forget, not far off $20.00 though.
Cost of some Naval Jelly, self-etching primer, some brush-on Tremclad and the satisfaction of doing it all yourself: priceless.

True that could work if you wanted to reverse engineer the control arms and try and make/improve them but for simple plug and play the OEM works great.
My original arms were 18 years old, I really should have replaced them years sooner but I neglected it.
I finally got around to rebuilding my rear suspension last summer and it's solid now, no sag or noises.

You forget that some of the new items even though made by the same manufacturer are inferior to the originals because of materials and cost cutting of today. Even brand name parts like Lemforder and Febi do not last nearly as long as the originals from back then. BTDT many times over.
I would personally take the forged arms over stamped steel any day (with new bushings). Even unpainted they will last longer.
Just my $0.02

Could be true but these were dealer stock, they might have been 10 years old sitting on the shelf.
I am sure they will last another 10+ years if not more which by then the car itself will most likely have fallen apart.
I also live in an area now which does not salt the roads which will help in their longevity 100x over.
