I am considering buying a used 1990 audi 80 sedan with 170,000 miles on it and was just wondering if I could get some feedback from audi owners on how they hold up, and their costs to maintain versus other cars like American cars. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If you are going to buy an Audi with 170,000 miles on it be prepared to spend a lot of money pretty soon. I love my 1988 90q and got it with 140k and have already put over $1000 into it and still have noisy lifters. And to answer your question yes they are usually more expensive to fix. While at Monroe muffler this guy showed me a bill for a 1990 90 brake job $700 something. Watch out but if you have the funds be my guest 80/90 are powerful and handle great.

I don't care about cosmetic things. Did you have to replace major parts? If I would have to put alot of money in it, I don't think it's something I can afford right now. Oh well, It had such a good price, but with those miles I don't think I can maintain it.

I had to replace the calipers, the rotors are almost finished, the PCV valve is broken (just annoying because I can't find the part) and the muffler is pretty rusted (hence I'm going to get stainless steel stebro muffler.)

I have 125K miles on her now......and without cosmetics stuff, id say that i put about $1000 into her....got new lifters (noise)...fixed an oil leak, exhaust, and gas leak, (very rare)....but i love this car!!!.....well worth the money

I am on my 5th Audi, my 2nd Quattro.
They have all seemed expensive.
Repairs are the hidden cost to owning an Audi.
But I love them, especially the Quattro. I hope to never drive anything
but an all-wheel drive from now on. The control is so incredible!
Expect to spend the bucks on everything.

I have a 1993 90 S that I bought with 80K milles for US$ 5000. Maintenance is very expensive for this car. I did the front brakes ($200), changed a broken headlamp ($320), a CV boot ($320), ESR valve (US$ 700) and a cathalytic convertor (US$ 1420), all at an Audi dealership. Still, driving an Audi is a very good experience, but next time I'm probably buying brand new with a monster extended warranty.
