Well I know there are a lot of posts about this but they all seem inconsistent, and a lot of horror stories so I need to ask for myself...I have a 1990 90 5Cyl with 140k miles on it and it has never had the transmission fluid changed on it, as far as I know, And it needs to be changed. My question is on my year how much fluid does it hold, and whats the best way to drain it, and what brand of fluid should I refill with. Also, Do i want to change the filter at this point since its gone so long with it, will it do more harm than good?

Fluid is changed by dropping the pan. The tranny dipstick tube unscrews from the pan, but mine was frozen so much that a pipe wrench counldn't break it loose. There's only four bolts that hold the pan up, loosen them and let the fluid drain (don't drop the pan yet or you'll take a bath!) Then pull the pan. The filter is inside that circular case and held up by phillips screws - be careful not to strip them. Holding the gasket in place is not fun, especially when it's been folded in a box:-).
Dextron III trans fluid is fine. I think I used three quarts or just shy of that, plus I threw a half a bottle of Lucas in with it.

never been changed then changing it now is a gamble!! Your clutches may not like the new slicker ATF thus causing slipage. If your fluid hasn't been changed every 30 to 60k then don't do it!
If it's not broke don't fix it! When it's broke rebuild it.
