Default Voltage spike?

A voltage spike from the alternator, can cause damage to any component of your electrical system...

Might be other problems with the electrical?

Has the lid on the fuse box under the hood been off during rainy weather?

Aftermarket radio installed? Hows the wiring for it? I've seen quite a few aftermarket radio wiring nightmares! (

Anything else electrical recently installed/repaired?

Might be the trunk-lid wiring, shorting out?

Default Simple stuff first. So it won't turn over and you hear the solenoid clicking...

Starter is shot. Now I may be wrong but the fuel circuit operates in hand with the starting circuit. I think you need too score an electrical schematic to see how everything is wired into each other.

Default Re: Voltage spike?

Well there is a horibly installed stereo and the battery is reading 17 volts. But the stereo is still working. The engine shut down while i was driving. I noticed it and turned the key and it cranked over but, didnt start, then i pop started it and it ran for another 1/4 mile then shut off again. Then it wouldnt turn over at all..

Default 17 volts is not good....

Sounds like its being over-charged by the alternator, as the voltage regulator on the alternator is allowing the battery to charge too much....

17 volts can cause all sorts of problems for all sorts of electrical components...as most can only handle 16 volts max...

Default Is the battery fully charged? If yes, check the timing belt. If no, charge the battery.

I say either broken timing belt or fuel pump.

Default Might be better off replacing the entire alternator....

considering its age, and wear? Plus the VR brush's rub on the copper rotator, are often worn, causing problems for new VR's.

The cost of a new VR, verses the cost of a rebuilt alternator? ;O)

Default Or be quick, to limit the amount of gasoline which leaks out?

Or you could turn your car up-side-down? ;O)

Default I dont think your fuel pump is bad.

Replace the starter make sure the battery is charged and then drive off into the sunset.
