Default blinking PNRD123 light

My friend has a 1993 Audi 90. The gear position light in the instrument cluster keeps blinking. I believe that it is throwing a blink code. It does a four flashes four time and then pauses and starts again. Has anyone seen this or does anyone have any information on the transmission blink codes? I would appreciate any help you could give.
