Default Calling in the tranny experts...

I'm having a problem with my 1995 Audi 90 Quattro transmission. My first thought was it had to be the clutch. Then I thought it might be the 3rd gear synchronizer. I need some opinions. Here's the dignosis:

The problem did not gradually happen. One day it jsut started (this is what made me rule out the possibility of it being the clutch). I noticed I went to shift into 3rd gear and it started grinding. It was not enough to keep me from shifting into 3rd, but enough to know something was wrong. In order to not hurt anything, I just started skipping 3rd gear. Then I went to test it a little and find out what was wrong. I noticed that if I do not have the clutch pressed, there is no resistance if I move the shifter into 3rd. When the car is running you're not supposed to be able to put it in gear without the clutch in. This is what made me think it was the synchronizer, but then I remembered my 1992 VW Corrado with the bad synchro. To my knowledge, a bad synchro doesn't make the gear grind, it just makes it very dificult to get the shifter into gear. When I'm driving and I'm in 2nd ready to shift into 3rd, if I push the clutch in and move the shifter into neutral, keep the clutch in for about 4-5 seconds, then move the shifter to 3rd, it does not grind. That's what through me all off. I have no idea what it is.

Any ideas?

Default Possibly....

Worn gearbox mounts(2)?

Worn front snub mount?

Worn shifter linkage?

Clutch hydraulic system, not disengaging clutch all the way?

Worn internal components of your gearbox?

Low oil? Ever change the gearbox oil?

Check what you can, let us know what you find ;O)<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/9080/msgs/312181.phtml">https://forums.audiworld.com/9080/msgs/312181.phtml</a</li></ul>

Default IMO there is a problem with something in the 01A trannies

even with several different trannies, I have always experienced grinding in 3rd gear at high RPM's. My first tranny I continuously beat the crap out of and eventually the problem was experienced at all speeds. Maybe your previous owner beat the tranny in a similar way.
Unfortunately I moved and had to dispose of the transmission before I had the chance to disassemble it and see what I'd done. I can also reproduce the symptom with 100% reliability so I've always wondered.
ehhhhh -is yours 01A?

Default 3rd gear syncro is your problem

Happened to my previous transmission, caused (in my case) by hard shifting, to the point where the syncro blew up into pieces, and a chunk wedged between the center diff and the case, and blew a hole the size of an egg in the diff case. It was maybe a year between the time that the syncro actually blew up and the hole happened, in that time i was able to use reverse maybe a handfull of times, and many of the gears were hit or miss (chunks of syncro floating around making friends with all the gears). I was in school at the time and couldnt afford to fix it (probably should have been taking the bus all that time... pffft ya right!). When the case finally let go i was lucky i got a nice tax return.

The transmission i replaced it with was from a junk yard, and after a couple high RPM shifts it started doing it as well, its at the point where i have to get my double clutch action perfect to get no grind, and thats under any driving conditions

If your lucky to have caught it early try changing your tranny fluid to this stuff:

<a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/9080/msgs/328485.phtml">Motul</a>

I haven't tried it myself, but i'm going to order some this week and give it a go. If that doesnt work i'll be in the market for another tranny. Or i'll look into getting this one rebuilt... i'll cross that bridge when i get there.

You can get that stuff from here (i'm sure other places too, this place is close to me):

Default Pictures....

Yours doesnt sound like its at the extreme mine was, i tried avoiding the grind whenever possible, but i was careless and made the mistake of driving the car hard with a syncro in bad condition... live and learn!

Thru this hole is where i generously donated 3 quarts of redline tranny fluid to the City of Ottawa on the 417 highway

This is the biggest chunk i found in the tranny, a nice reminder of how incredibly stupid i once was.
