you'll probably get more response from people who own the car

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeroforum?id=11</a

When you get the door panel off, check to make sure the lock **** is attached to a plastic clip that goes into the lock mechanism.
to remove the panel, take out the screws in the armrest, pop out the plastic insert in the door releas, and remove the screw there, take out the screw on the inside of the door, nearest the hinge, them pry up gently with a screwdriver or trim tool all around the door panel. if memory serves there are about 12 plastic trim clips. maybe 4 on top, a few in the middle, and two on each side. and unscrew the mirror trim ring. should be able to do that by hand. once you get the screws out the rest is intuitive.
