Default Can someone explain why torque on a bolt will be so many foot pounds PLUS a fraction of a turn?

Why specify the fraction of the turn? Why not just up the torque? What am I not understanding?

Default yep... stretch. Torque = friction between the surfaces (threads, bolt head)...

using a predetermined torque value sets the initial level of friction where stretch is a known value (pretty much zero stretch at that point). Then the angle dictates how much load is applied based on the type of threads.

That's why its critical to use the recommended lubricant (or to remove all if it is recommended). Lubrication changes the friction values.

Default well said. these stretch bolts are also known as "torque to yield" bolts wherein they will stretch

and not return to their original shape.

Default that includes driveshaft hub bolts too...

tried reusing the big bolt on the outer CV... don't even bother... *snap*

Atleast when you release the tension on them the broken part unthreads really easily... long needle-nose vicegrips anyone?

Default yes, sir!

the only time the broken part will be "stuck" is if it is bottomed out in the thread bore. those are a serious PITA to remove...but in that case the bolt was too long to begin with. :-(

Thank you! Question. Audi recommends "oiling" the crank bolt. Will motor oil do?

That's what they meant - new/clean oil only!
