can you take the a/c compressor or belt out of a 20v?

<center><img src="http://audi_90_snow.jpg"></center><p>I want to rid my engine of the drain of the broken a/c system. Unless there is s cheap secret trick to fix the a/c, I want to remove it entirely or just remove the belt.

so that is all my mechanic did. Actually, he knows me well enough that I dropped off my car after the compressor died for him to look at it. He called me, "Your compressor is shot. I just cut the belt. It is expensive if you want the AC fixed properly. Want me to get you a quote?"

Thank you guys, sounds like a common problem. I'll do it in two stages, cut the belt, then remove when I have time.
