clutch took a dive today

So I was coasting down a hill like I normally do and once I got to the bottom put the clutch in gear to accelerate. Instead of accelerating the engine revved hard and I had a large snap/clunk from underneath the car and as I tried to reshift and do it again I could hear something flopping around. The engine is fine and revs when I accelerate, so nothing is wrong there. It's definitely something in the clutch. When I have it in gear and depress the clutch pedal the car won't die like it normally should, but when I put it into a higher gear it will start revving the engine without anything touching the accelerator.
Hopefully something simple broke in the gear housing and my entire clutch didn't die. Any input or advice?
