Default Control arm bushing completed, what a new ride

Car moves like it never has before, so much more control now

Car up on ramps, took off tire to get to ball joint easier and supported subframe
(had to take off subframe bolts to get the control arm bolt out)
Control arm is loose (no i didn't support the car on the subframe, another jack
is behind):

The bushing before pressed out, notice the abnormal shape on the outside
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/46492/p7270029.jpg">
The bushing is out, must of been bad? Why yes because I pulled the rubber
part with my hand!
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/46492/p7270032.jpg">
The lone ring, no rubber attached at all, completely came out
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/46492/p7270034.jpg">
The tool: makeshift press holder with some washers and piping stuff for
plates
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/46492/p7270035.jpg">
4 ton bottle neck jack to do the job (was a little overkill if you ask me)
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/46492/p7270036.jpg">
Car is back on its wheels and is ready for an alignment because of the old
bushings being so crappy and off

Default Re: With this setup you really need a third hand.. tough with only two

I took some old scrap heavy L beams and bolted them together to create a T beam. Drilling holes on the ends for I think 1/2" long rods long enough for the jack and for a few more inches extra. After having two T platforms with the flat sides facing eachother you can feed the rods into the drilled holes, that SHOULD line up (otherwise you could get warping), and use some heavy nuts and washers on both ends (unless you use a one end thread rod like i did). Make sure the platforms are parallel and start using.
Try to make sure the jack is in the middle of the T, otherwise you will bend the edged if you use the jack to the fullest and you have an active 2-3ton spring ready to fly.

If you want you can use larger rods but make sure to keep enough edge metal when drilling.. more surface area on those rods the better!

Default Nice work! How helpful were those Bentley scans?

How tough would you rate the job? The bushings on my car could probably use some attention as well. =)

Default Re: i would say a 4/10 solo, someone else helping: 2/10.

And yes, they did help but i was still missing some subframe bolt torques (i have a funny plate for the bushing area).. Got most of them from my 5k book since they had the same as that scan you gave me. Thanks again for the scan, real saver!

The most time sucked up was trying to hold the control arm up, place washers and a press plate while trying to put the jack in position. If i had a helper i would say about 1 hour for a whole control arm.. This job solo took me about 3 or so for one contorl arm.
