Default coolant overflow 90s

engine operates at normal temp. fans come on when required. turn engine off and there is a violent backflow of coolant to the coolant tank. ends up loosing/escaping coolant. anyone have an idea what's going on?

Default no... not the sensors... the thermostat "valve"

you describe exactly what happens when the thermostat goes bad. there's enough pressure to force it open when the car is running, but as soon as the pressure stops, it shuts tight again. the thermostat is loacated in a spherical housing where the radiator hose meets the cylinder head. a new one costs less than $10, the job isn't too hard either.
