Today my b4 started to overheat on the way home from work. I'm guessing the t-stat is failing but i thought it failed in the open position. So if that isn't the problem then what?? Water pump maybe??

Hard to believe a car over-heating in winter...
Indication problem? Air in the system?
Electrical maybe? Rad fans...
Mechanical? Thermostat? WasserPump?
Coolant system pressurizing?
How olds your timing belt? ;O)

I drove around with the fans out of the car while installing the Spal fans for a few days. Wasnt as cold as it is now and no over heating issue. I think he would have to be sitting in traffic for a pretty long time.
Anway probably one of the other issues. t-stat stuck shut or somethings wrong with the coolant.
What makes you think the T-stat was stuck open?

The fans have a very important role in engine temp regulation. IMO, your asking for trouble, driving around with out the fans.
If it were me, I wouldnt post such info here, as the next guy might think it OK to drive without the fans, and seriously over-heat his engine. Then proclaim "So & so drove without his fans..."
Way too many variables...

I drove around without the fans but I don't see more then 5 mins of traffic in a days time. If I had to deal with any sort of constant traffic I wouldn' have attempted it. DRIVE YOU'RE CAR WITHOUT FANS AT YOU'RE OWN RISK! ![Smile](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I still don't think its his fans. The way he worded his post it sounds like he was moving. Broken fans wont cause the car to over heat if hes moving. Now if he was sitting in traffic it could be a diffrent story.
So how long did it take for the car to over heat from the time it was started aproximatly?
