crankcase holding tool question

I have everything lined up, and the bar to hold the camshafts in position is on... Everything should be lined up, right?
I can feel the hole where the tip of the holding tool goes, but I cant thread the tool in far enough to lock the crankshaft. I tighten it until is becomes pretty difficult to turn, an if I then remove the camshaft tool, I can turn the crankshaft.
What am I doing wrong?

Personally, when I change the timing belt, I really like to know the crankshaft "is" on its timing mark! ;O) Takes a split second to glance at the mark to verify! ;O)

Just because the cam holding tool goes on, that does not necessarily mean that the crank is at TDC. Did you check the timing mark on the drank pulley? You probably need to take the cam holding tool off and turn the crank until the cam keys rotate 360 degrees. Be careful...this is supposed to be the easy part...

Have a second person put a breaker bar on the crank pulley and jiggle it while you screw the crank holding tool by hand. This way you are sure it goes in all the way.
