Default CV Joints?

I posted recently about replacing tie rod ends, shocks, and ball joints on my 1989 Audi 90 Quattro. I just ordered control arm bushings for both sides on the front.

My question is about the noise i'm still hearing. When turning my wheel all the way to the left and all the way to the right i notice a clunking sound when going forward. However when going in reverse i don't notice these sounds. Also when i get my wheel to like 3/4 of way it like hits a loose spot and seems to have alot of play at the end of my turning. I did these tests in the mall parking lot while doing slow "donuts". Most of the noise comes when i move forward and after about the first revolution or donut and comes when turning either right or left.

I guess my questions are... 1. Does it sound like a CV Joint. 2. Which CV Joint and 3. How many CV Joints does my car have?

Thanks again.

Default Did you replace the strut bearings on top of the front struts?

I don't typically think of CV joint when folks complain of clunking. Clunking to me implies control arm bushings, struts, or strut bearing/bushings. CV joints usually click or "clack" when making turns but don't usually clunk. Usually CV joints will have a split or cracked rubber boot before they go bad, then all the black grease has been expelled everywhere into your wheelwells and suspension components. You should have 2 inner and 2 outer cV joints on the front. Not sure about the back as I only have FWD. Clunking and noisy suspensions are a real bitch. You fix one component on the suspension and it seems to amplify the weaknesses of all the old components, so that you eventually end up replacing every single piece with a new part and then the cycle starts over again in a few years.

Default Yep

I replaced the strut mounts also. This car sat in a garage for several years and when replacing the rear wheel bearing noticed that the rear CV was dry. Grease is gonna be necessary all around.

Does anyone have a parts diagram for the front end of my car?

Default Just buy 2 new front axles from Empi for $100/each and be done

with it for the next 8-10 years. Packing CV joints is not a fun job. Do it right the first time so you don't have to get an alignment every 3 months when a new suspension component is added.
