1989 90Quattro

I just finished taking off and putting on new outer CV joints. When attempting to reattach the CV to the Hub I noticed the new CV has what appears to be a ring around the outer rim of the joint. This won't allow the joint to slide down onto the splines. Did I receive the wrong CV or is this just a shroud that needs removed. I have pics i'm trying to upload to help describe the situation. Anyone have any ideas??

These are pics of the old CV and the new CV. They looked similar enough before putting them on...any ideas??

I could be wrong but those axles look like different parts. Maybe you were sent the wrong part?
