Default Damn Steering Pump!!!

Alright, my p/s pump had been getting more noisy as time went on and decided to get a "Factory" reman. pump from Blau. I put 450 miles on her on a round trip from Cleveland to Cincinnati and back. When I got home the pump sounded like ***!!! It sounded as if the bearings were about to go. So I put the new pump on tonight and that new one sounded a heck of a lot different.....it sounded even worse! It still had that same noise. You think it could be a bad pump??? Now I'm wondering if the belt tension had anything to do with it. I brought the tensioner to where it was before and checked it. seemed to be close, but with all that crap in the way..... Help me guys !TIA

You sure you have enough fluid in there. Maybe there is still some air in the system???

Default Look elsewhere....

my car was did the same exact thing, i swapped the pump and everything. It had nothing to do with the pump, it was the idler pulley all along making that horrible noise even though it sounded like it was the PS pump.

I hear what you are saying. I just replaced the idler pulley about 2 years ago. Do you think its on its way out already? An older buddy of mine at work(Used to have Alfas) said the noise does have that hollow pump sound to it. I myself have never changed an idler pulley. Is it a difficult job? Should I do the timing belt while I'm there?
Also, the book said to have the 5z indicator face in the direction of the cars movement. Now when I took that ps pulley off, the 5z was on the back I think. the 4z on the other side was facing forward. Is this a big deal?? Another also, when I took the pressure hose off the pump(not the suction) there was a small washer in the end loop of the hose where the banjo bolt goes in. I'm figuring it goes down into the hose casing considering it was the same cadmium plated color and it did fit down the pressure hose metal casing end. Dunno what to do now..

Fluid filled and bled. Back and forth, back and forth with the steering wheel. still at max.

OK. My buddy at work said the sounds still there and he's sure its not the pump. He wanted to say the alt. but was replaced only 3 years ago. Tensioner possibly???

Default Yea check both the tensioner and the idler pulley first.

It's real easy to do, so you might as well start there. Just spin them with your finger when the belt is off and you'll know right away if it's the cause. You'll either feel it grinding or hear a whining sound.
