Default Different 3 wire coolant sensor replaces a 4 wire?

I replaced the coolant sensor that goes toi the ECU in hopes to solve my problems. I noticed the coolant sensor below it had a 4 wire connector, but the sensor has 3 slots. Then I noticed one of the wires was cut, so I reconnected it. Should I disconnect the wire that I re-attached? I believe the sensor is for the temp guage? The Wiring is some what corroded, and tried to clean it with electric cleaner and scrape come of the residue off the sensor and connector. Car is a 90 90 10v FWD

The 3-wire does replace the 4-wire. The 4th wire is no longer necessary.
